Gondziłło, seduced by corrupt elites and a young woman, ends up arrested for fraud. Meanwhile, Col. Omski becomes fatally obsessed with Teresa, the wife of a powerful official. Their tragic romance is only a backdrop for a broader critique of a young state plagued by ambition, hypocrisy, and moral decline.
